Born on 29 December 1952; two sons, one granddaughter.

Studied German language and literature, English language and literature, and history of art in Heidelberg, Edinburgh and Zaragoza.

Member of BUND / Friends of the Earth Germany, WWF, the Europa-Union (German section of the Union of European Federalists), Amnesty International, Greenpeace and various cultural and social organisations in Baden-Württemberg.

Member of The Greens since 1989; member of the executive committee of the Baden-Württemberg Land branch of Alliance 90/The Greens from 1995 to 1999 and from 2001 to 2013; chairwoman of the same committee from 2003 to 2005.

Member of the German Bundestag since 2005; spokeswoman on nuclear policy for the Alliance 90/The Greens parliamentary group with responsibility for issues relating to nuclear safety, final disposal sites, non-ionising radiation (electrosmog) and energy research during the current 18th electoral term; chairwoman of the German-Japanese parliamentarian group in the German Bundestag since 2014.
